First, do yourself a favor and REMOVE you're crossbars from your vehicle. It was a real PITA to install the fronts, but after removing the rear bar, it was incredibly simple.I had another top rated rack with a simpler, single turn locks stem but it failed during our first adventure. This system uses a slightly more cumbersome system to lock the top bar in place, but it remained reliably rock solid even after multiple trips, so has proven superior so far. I will place the top bars in the desired position and just leave them in place all season.Having notches in the top bar has made keeping the tie down straps in place a much more reliable event too. One trick I use is running straps through scupper holes, giving a much more secure feeling. This works great! (so far). Just did about 900 mile trip with a 75lb kayak on this and had no issues. This was the second cradle I tried and it was a better fit! Both I tried weren't easy to install because you have to tighten it by hand and depending on the roor rack you got, it will take some time and effort to install it. Other than the install taking time, this is a good product. This is on a Suburu Outback and they work well. The crossbars on this Outback model fold inward onto the roof and lock in place. The roof rack device attached nicely. Sturdy and secure. Using this for 2 kayaks at a time.I got the 4-pc "Bigfoot" style which is the version that works for mounting a canoe. I saw Jeremy's review saying it doesn't fit well on the 2.5" flat bars. That's what I've got on my Pacifica minivan. I appreciated his photos and review but wasn't that concerned about the fit and after installing them, I think it's fine in that regard. The main point of the bottom bracket is to anchor the holder onto the bar. The weight is going to get transferred through the top which is flatter anyway. With the pads, I'm not worried it will scratch the bars. Now, having installed these, I am REALLY not a fan of how they go together. You have to thread the included thumb screws from the bottom (where by the way, your car is) about 1.5" onto the 3" bolts to get it to tighten. The thumb screws are plastic, with nyloc nuts heat staked into them, and most of them are not set straight... meaning the thumb screw looks like it's crossthreaded, and while you're tightening it (with your wrist at a bad angle, applying a lot of torque to thread through the nylon part), the contact surface is not flat on the bottom bracket and this makes it even harder to get tight. Getting them screwed on was a real pain. It should have socket bolts instead of hex-head bolts; preferably with a captured nut on the bottom, so you can tighten from above with a tool. I used a drill with a socket attachment from above for the first part but for the last part of tightening the hex head is captured in the body of the mount. The mounts themselves are reasonably well designed and sturdy, but for the price I think they could have done better with the assembly design.Note that these don't fold down, the "L" shaped mounts are solid.Comes with everything I needed to tie my boat down. Everything was sturdy and right after my 5 hour drive with the canoe. Tightening the bolts was a little awkward but but that is a small thing. My cross bars do not stay on full time so rather than loosening the bolts, I just took the rack off and it will be ready for my next time to the riverProduct came pre assembled which was nice. Installing on the car was pretty simple. Keep in mind you get what you pay for and you’ll be absolutely thrilled with this product. The instructions are a little lacking and don't say exactly what to do with the "waterproof gaskets." These are actually just washers that go on the bolts with the rack. There's nothing to explain how to use them. It's not super hard to figure out but if you follow the directions exactly as written you'd think you didn't need them. They aren't mentioned at all during installation. The product overall had a decent build quantity. The rubber gaskets which are just thin strips of rubber seem flimsy and easy to rip. Time will tell. I can't say how well the rewatch actually works yet. I haven't put my kayaks on it yet. I think it will work fine.
